Hoodia gordonii is a cactus-like succulent that grows in the most arid environments of Namibia and South Africa. For centuries, Hoodia gordonii has also served as an important food source and medicinal plant for the San and Nama people (Khoisan family) of Namibia. Over the years, these indigenous communities learnt to survive on the scarce resources that these regions provide.They came to regard the Hoodia gordonii as a highly energising source that could alleviate the symptoms of high blood pressure, diabetes and gout. They also found that Hoodia gordonii was very effective at suppressing food cravings and hunger pains in times of hardship.

Over the last decade, the beneficial properties of Hoodia gordonii have been studied by scientists. They have traced the hunger suppressing effect of Hoodia to the P*7 compound, which interacts with the brain's pituitary gland blood sugar (glucose ) monitoring system. When blood sugar levels drop, the brain signals that you are hungry.  Since P*7 compounds are 1 **0 x more active than glucose in the pituitary gland, a small intake of Hoodia gordonii can produce the same satiated (full) feeling as a large meal does. Hoodia gordonii can therefore significantly reduce the intake of food, especially the unhealthy snacks between normal meals.
