Laterite Stone Laterite is a red or brown superficial deposit of clay or earth that gathers on the surface of rocks and has been produced by their decomposition. It is rich in iron and is found in many tropical regions, especially in ***** India and British East Africa a calcareous laterite with a high lime content is called kankar and has been used in building bridges and other large engineering works since it functions as a hydraulic cement. Laterites usually form a poor, unfertile soil, and are often used as clays for making tiles, and as a mortar in rough work. In India, laterite stone is found abundantly in the midland areas of Kerala and karnataka is used for construction work. The stone, known locally as vettukallu is obtained from hundreds of quarries where the stone is cut and dressed. It is believed that a Scottish scholar, Dr. Francis Buchanan, conducted studies in and around the region of Angadipuram in ***0 A.D and who named the porous rock laterite from the Latin term lateritis, which means brick stone. In India laterite stone continues to be used along the southwestern coast of the country and exposed laterite house have in the past decades actually become fashionable among rich urban dwellers building country homes in these areas
